Lotus Farms

The Lotus Farms is a series of experimental farms spread out over the villages and the biggest collective farm in Gold.[1]

DescriptionEdit

The Lotus Farms consist of various farms, which serve different experimental uses. One of them is a saltwater rice paddy in Whitesand. There is a number of fields of rice immersed in saltwater. Using something called reverse osmosis, the farm employsees are able to filter out the salt in the water. Through this, the rice becomes completely edible, with only a hint of saltiness.
Another one is a sericulture facility, where a lot of silkworms spin rainbow cocoons. Not only does the fabric made from these silkworms not need dyeing, they also do not fade or lose color when washed.
In the neighboring building are foreign species used for reference in selective breeding. Silkworms from Indonesia are known for their golden silk, Tasar silk worms from India make threads ten times thicker than usual, hundreds of silk worms from Uganda spin cocoons the size of rugby balls, and more. The best are the Hitachi silkworms kept in an isolated, airtight room. The two meter long, three headed worms are feasting on copious amounts of mulberry leaves and simultaneously spitting out silk from one of its three mouths. Due to their quick and active process, the inside of the observation window has to be cleaned off often to stop the silk from covering it completely. Since the insects are so big, they have trouble breathing, so oxygen is pumped into the enclosure. The concentration of oxygen is so high that if there was an open flame near, the whole building would blow up, which is why the worms are kept in an air locked room.
Next to the sericulture farm are fields with potatoes, yams, onions, radishes, strawberries and other plants. During winter, some of the fields are covered in snow-like bubbles. Potatoes and yams are susceptible to frost damage, so when the temperature drops too much, they use the bubbles produced by an insect called a seedbed froghopper to keep the plants warm. These bugs were originally a type of harmful pests known as froghoppers, but were mutated into a useful type with cantus. The same goes for so called crimson wasps, which are hybrids of the fierce giant hornet and the brown hornet and were altered to exclusively prey on harmful insects while leaving humans and livestock alone.[1]
